AltaSteel is a scrap-based mini-mill operation located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The plant has both melting and casting facilities and a production capability of over 350,000 tones of
steel billets annually. AltaSteel is a world leader in the manufacture of heat-treated grinding rod,
which it markets directly to mining operations around the globe. AltaSteel employs over 350 people,

Million per year.
AltaSteel was founded in 1955 as Premier Steel Mills Ltd. and is distinguished as having the first
continuous casting operation for carbon steels in North America. Implemented in 1962, this
operation was one of the most significant steps forward in steelmaking technology in the past 50
years. This entrepreneurial spirit is still a big part of AltaSteel’s culture which is characterized by a
high level of technical capability, a “can do” attitude, and an innovative approach to finding low cost
solutions to complex technical challenges. In 2006, AltaSteel was sold to the Scaw Metals Group,

THE POSITION
AltaSteel is seeking a Manager of Reliability and Maintenance to drive best practices in their
company while developing a highly skilled team. Based in Edmonton and reporting to the Vice
President, Operations, the Manager of Reliability and Maintenance is responsible for,
implementing, and managing the systems, structure, and processes necessary to achieve and
sustain the Maintenance Mission. This role is positioned to be the most exciting change
management opportunity of an individuals career. The organization has currently developed
and is implementing a predictive maintenance system based on best practices. The successful
candidate will play a key role in the finalization and effective implementation of the process,
helping to make predictive maintenance an ingrained part of the organization’s culture. The
incumbent is responsible for the effective and efficient use of all manpower, materials, parts and
other resources under his or her control as well as providing capacity, asset reliability and best
life cycle cost to the operation.
The Manager of Reliability and Maintenance is an integral member of the plant management team
and works as an organizational peer and partner to the Engineering and Production/Operations
Managers. Currently this role oversees approximately 80 staff, 6 administrative and management
professionals, 2 planners and the PMI (Proactive Maintenance Initiative) team – an organizational
wide initiative tasked with achieving reliability excellence in the operations. Supported by an
exceptionally strong management team with a firm belief in the value and need for predictive
maintenance, the Manager of Reliability and Maintenance will act as a lead change agent and
influencer within a great organization.
Key success factors:
Strategic Business Planning – Translate the organization’s business goals into appropriate
Maintenance, Reliability and Life Cycle Cost goals that support and contribute to the
organization’s business results.
Operational Effectiveness – Enforces good safety practices within the Maintenance and
Reliability function and ensures compliance with the company Engineering Change
Management process. This individual will be responsible to develop staff; measure
performance; provide feedback and counsel; promote a concern for quality and precision;
and ensure adequate facilities and equipment resources are in place.
Strategic Leadership – Mentor train, and support the Maintenance Team, provide
challenges, create excitement and a desire to continuously learn. Provide the Team with
performance feedback annually and throughout the year. The Manager of Reliability and
Maintenance will be expected to foster a culture that delivers on a predictive maintenance
approach, does not tolerate repetitive equipment failures, and seeks to understand and
eliminate the root causes. Also demonstrates an ability to anticipate outcomes and to adjust
approaches and services accordingly.
Implementation Development – Implements a measurement and performance evaluation
system in support of two primary objectives: optimal resource management and optimal
equipment reliability.
Maintenance Services & Programs – Lead change management initiatives in these areas
and be an ambassador for innovative programs developed at a global level. Implements a
structured process for performing maintenance work. Ensures equipment maintenance
plans are created and implemented to support required levels of reliability.
THE INDIVIDUAL
It is important that the successful candidate possess the following attributes:
Post secondary education in Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering or significant
experience in reliability excellence;
Several years of progressive maintenance management experience with a minimum
of 10+ years of people and/or departmental leadership experience are required;
Superintendant level experience with 3-5 years of manger level experience is an
asset;
A passion for planned and predicative maintenance and innovation;
Proven success in leading major change management initiatives;

Skilled in the management of a unionized work force with a positive attitude towards
the role the union plays;
Displays a non-wavering commitment to safety;
An influencer with a strong character, able to engage and develop their staff;
Demonstrated ability to lead with a collaborative and results-driven style focusing on
the achievements being delivered through a team approach;
Solution oriented, with a strong orientation to “moving the yardsticks” against the
defined needs of the business;
Strong facilitation skills through all modes of communication (written and verbal);
Leadership skills that will incite enthusiasm, provide vision, create positive morale,
role model standards of professionalism and ensure that results are delivered in a
timely and satisfactory manner;
Demonstrated initiative and motivation to continuous improvement of self and
company processes; undying pride in workmanship and job ownership; and
Known as being an effective member of the team.
