Pulley Alignment Tip
Laser Pulley Alignment
Always mount your laser line emitter on the smaller pulley, and put your magnetic targets on the larger pulley. This will give you better visual resolution and result in a more accurate alignment.

(Asset) Health Tip
Don’t overlook the daily walk around your plant and what it can pick up.
As well as the condition monitoring of selected critical machines for problems I walk around the plant on a pre set route Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings first thing and take a “zonal” look at the bigger picture.
I have picked up potential failures that I would not have, if I had just concentrated on the gearboxes, motors and bearings.
It’s also a great way to enjoy the fresh air on a beautiful morning!

Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) Tip
How to Select Assets for RCM Analysis
Reliability Centered Maintenance is a structured process that requires people, time and resources. Because of these associated costs, RCM should first be applied where it will show a return on the money invested in training, performing the analyses, and implementing the tasks that come out of your analyses. Assets should be selected as candidates for RCM analysis based on Reliability Measures, in doing so we can then track the assets performance prior to, and then following the RCM Analysis.
Candidates for RCM should have a history of:
• Equipment Related Operational Losses
• Equipment Related Speed Losses
• Equipment Related Quality Losses
• Poor Environmental, Health and Safety Performance
Companies with successful RCM efforts use Reliability Measures to help select the right reliability tools to minimize key manufacturing losses.

Infrared Tip
Share IR Software & Reports to Maximize Thermography Program
Be sure to maximize your company’s thermography program by sharing IR analysis software and reports with others. Openly sharing data and reports enables you to leverage the knowledge of just a few expert thermographers, whether they’re down the hall, in a different building, or at an entirely different location.
Some IR camera and software providers charge for individual site and user licenses for multiple locations and users, so be sure to check your licensing agreements. For the greatest flexibility in leveraging your thermography resources, be sure to partner with an IR camera and software provider that allows you to share its software and reports openly.

Maintenance Tip: Ingress Protection (IP) Ratings
“Splashproof” connectors for harsh environments are subject to industry standards. True Splashproof connectors for vibration sensors are given an Ingress Protection rating, or IP rating. In order to qualify the level of sealing provided by a sensor connector, use the following chart:
IP 60 – No protection
IP 61 – Protection against vertically dripping water
IP 62 – Protection against angled dripping water
IP 63 – Protection against sprayed water
IP 64 – Protection against splashed water
IP 65 – Protection against water jets
IP 66 – Protection against pressure jets
IP 67 – Protection against effects of immersion
IP 68 – Protection against indefinite immersion
NOTE: The “6X” designation in the sample IP ratings designates that the connection is dust tight.

Data Analysis Tip
Data Analysis Tip Part 1 – Consider the Machine First and Then the Graphs
Archived at
http://maintenancetalk.com/blog.php/tipsblog
A common approach to looking at vibration spectra is to display the graphs and then ask “What is wrong with this machine?” Another common approach to analyzing vibration spectra is to display the graphs and then ask “What is this peak?” and “what is that peak” A better approach to analyzing data is to first ask “What faults can this machine have?”, “Which of these are most common for this machine?” and finally, “How do these faults present themselves?” In fact, these questions should really be asked before the machine is tested to ensure the test being taken is appropriate for finding evidence of the potential fault.
A good exercise is to draw a simple schematic of the machine including test points and internal components, then write down a list of the most common faults the machine may experience. Between the diagram and a vibration text book or reference chart, you can now describe what peaks and patterns in each test point will coincide with each fault. Finally, go down the list of faults and patterns and check the data to see if it contains any of these patterns or not.
