Why doesn’t company management understand?
Terry O’s Train of Random Thoughts
Whenever we complete a maintenance conference like RCM-2008, EAM-2008 and MTrain-2008 I cannot help but think that we need to do a better job talking with management about the financial benefits of doing “good practice” or “best practice” maintenance.
Not only will this approach result in improved uptime, availability and reliability, it will usually decrease maintenance cost.
What business person would not like improved performance at a lower cost?
Our latest survey shows that 87% of maintenance and reliability professionals agree that maintenance is extremely important to companies overall financial health but only 7% are satisfied with their current maintenance performance.
That seems like a huge disconnect.
How can we communicate the business opportunity that comes with maintenance done correctly?

It offers all benefits of traditional RCM, but fully integrated into all business processes. It extends asset care to all stakeholders, not just the maintenance department. It enables greater certainties in risk and cost evaluation of maintenance strategies. It brings the maintenance strategy into real time and it focuses vital and limited maintenance skills to the right place.

The Changing Role of the Craftsperson
by Chuck Kooistra Sr. Vice President, General Physics Corporation
The most pressing issue in North American manufacturing does not involve competition from overseas. The critical issue involves the short supply of qualified technical labor available to get the work done.
Your ability to deliver trickles up from the manufacturing floor. The number and quality of goods you can manufacture is in direct relation to the number and quality of people you are able to employ on your floor. It is a simple equation made increasingly complex by various factors, including the aging workforce and a diminishing interest in the skilled trades.
In order for your company to survive this crisis, you must aggressively pursue a three-pronged approach to the problem. More…
