Tricks to Keep things Simple in Maintenance

by Steve Turner, OMCS

In the realm of maintenance analysis, we engineers seem to take great delight in turning something which is fundamentally simple into something that is very complex.

By doing this:

• We introduce numbers of assumptions of which many, may be (and often are) flawed.

• We purchase statistical software which takes the onus of analysis away from the very people who understand the plant (the operators and tradesmen) as these people are often not sufficiently computer literate to run the complex software and almost always not statistically competent. More…

Steam Trap Testing Sound Patterns

From a recent post at MaintenanceForums.com

I have been in search of a simple steam trap testing description for the 5 basic types of steam traps. All I want is as follows:

Example: Contact the downstream side of an inverted bucket steam trap and you should hear ____________ (hold/discharge, hissing, rattling, no sound etc...) if it is functioning properly.

Same for all other trap types.

Does anyone have a sound pattern description for each type of trap they can share?

Premature failure of self-aligning roller bearing

From a recent post at MaintenanceForums.com

Good Morning,

I am attaching pictures of a 22330 bearing (self-aligning double row) that ran for only three months. It is on the commutator end of a 1500hp motor. Prior to dismantle; my vibe data picked up BPFI and FTF faults, which were quite obvious once dismantled.

My question to those more experienced in Root Cause Analysis than myself: What do you think is the most probable cause?

I was leaning toward contamination (through the exit hole) of the lubrication. The pitting was only on the outboard side, and note the discoloration of the grease. However, notice the roller’s pattern...almost like it was a stationary fault. Any advice, input, or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I have come across some literature that points to “axial compression” as being a possible cause

Thanks, Jeff

Measuring Shock Pulse - another approach to Front Line Condition Monitoring

by Louis Morando, SPM Instrument Inc.

Downtime in a paper mill or any 24/7 facility is very expensive in maintenance costs, but even more so in the impact to profit because of production loss. In this article we will explain the Shock Pulse Method, why it’s a good choice for frontline vibration measurement and show the resulting savings that the Hallsta Mill in Sweden realized from utilizing it as the primary component of its Condition Based Maintenance Program.

Removing Barriers to Reliability

by N. Eric Matthews, P.E. Production Manager, Allen Steam Station, Duke Energy, and Arne Skaalure, Project Manager, RMG

Effective planning and scheduling are foundational elements for successful work management.

Well-defined and implemented planning and scheduling processes ensure that a plant’s most important work will be done safely, efficiently and at the right time. Duke Energy professionals work diligently at improving their Midwest and Carolinas fleet’s work processes through a Barrier Process.

Work exceeding Estimated vs. Actual Hours targets is flagged, categorized and documented by technicians in the CMMS. These exceptions are reviewed weekly at a Barrier Meeting and assigned to plant personnel responsible for removing identified barriers. Barriers such as incomplete planning, incorrect parts, poor communication or coordination, scope creep, etc., result in unsafe situations, a frustrated workforce, plus a 10 - 20% productivity loss.

With a clear focus on safety and asset reliability, Duke’s planning and scheduling processes are sustainable and continuously improving because the Barrier Process energizes the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle for reliability. More…
