PM and PdM Valves and Instruments
Up to what extent valves and instruments are included in the PM or PdM program of an organization?
I am involved in the data entry of all the manageable assets installed on board a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels used for oil & gas E&P.
We used P&ID drawings to cover all of these assets. In that sense, we are getting several hundreds of different kind of valves, be it manual, motor or hydraulic operated. Also for main equipment, there are a numerous instruments installed - level gauge, indicators, transmitters, controllers to name a few.
If we are to register all the said assets, then upload to the PM or Pdm program, will this result to a thousand work orders? Is there really a need to cover these assets or be more selective on what type of valves and instruments that will be included in the PM?
Thanks in advance.

AMP Blog: Apprentice To a Butcher
One day I suddenly hit upon a realization that eluded me for so long.
This came up while I became a little more curious about learning the roots of ‘Lean Manufacturing’. Most of us know that the concepts of ‘lean’ were developed by Taichi Ohno of Toyota and later made more popular through his books and through Goldratt’s ‘Theory of Constraints’ (perhaps important to remember that the phrase ‘lean manufacturing’ was not coined by Ohno). But when Ohno was asked as to where he got his ideas from he frankly admitted that he got his ideas from Henry Ford and it was not his original idea. And where did Henry Ford get his concept of waste elimination, lean manufacturing and assembly line that changed forever the concepts of manufacturing operations all over the world? Now came the surprise.
Ford got his ideas of waste elimination and lean manufacturing through his observation of the local butchers at their work. More…

Military Aircraft Modal Testing Application Note
Military aircraft, rotorcraft, and selected fixed-wing aircraft are often adapted to accommodate a wide variety of armament and other accessory gear that they were not originally designed to handle. The nature of continually changing peacetime and battlefield requirements puts a severe demand on engineers to make these components fit and operate efficiently and safely within a limited development time.
Structural engineers perform special tests to ensure that the retrofitted components are properly mounted and secure and the aircraft are safe. The engineers typically use multi-channel data acquisition systems and accelerometers for modal analysis to measure vibrations before and after the components are mounted.

Reliability 101 – Session 3
Steps to Optimal Reliability in under 10 Minutes
By Ricky Smith CMRP
If thought Session 1 and 2 of Reliability 101 was good, wait until you see and hear Session 3. Ricky gets to the basics one needs in order to build a solid reliability program.
Have you ever heard the statement “You don’t know what you don’t know”. This session illustrates this analogy. If you are serious about learning from a no nonsense, simple to understand lesson focused on Optimizing Reliability then this is the place for you.
As Ricky says - Don’t walk around lost, follow the signs - to Optimal Reliability. This exciting session may be just what the doctor ordered.

Lessons Learned Implementing an Infrared Program
by Jennifer Daugherty and Roger Miller
Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC), at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, has focused efforts toward an improved infrared (IR) program. As equipment ages, the need for improving inspections and making work more effective becomes imperative. Infrared inspection of equipment allows equipment health to be determined and tear-down intervals to be driven more by condition at optimum frequencies. This paper discusses lessons learned while implementing an infrared program and passes those lessons on to others that may find it useful. More…
