Effective Asset Maintenance Strategies for Optimal Results

An iPresentation Tutorial by Brian Dunks, Lawson EAM
Engineers are often asked about the effectiveness of their maintenance strategy yet it remains a difficult question to answer. When calculating risks around equipment reliability, to determine the best strategy for asset maintenance engineers have historically relied on experience, intuition or used pc based software applications that support techniques such as Reliability Centred Maintenance, however these specialized applications have been hampered by their lack of integration into an organisation’s total business strategy.

Please join EAM Expert Brian Dunks for a 14 minute iPresentation on recent technology advancements that make the analysis and forecasting of maintenance options a more accurate task. More accurate analysis and forecasting results in strategies that engender a very real and positive impact on asset reliability and availability and overall organizational success.

Reliability & Six Sigma

From a recent post at MaintenanceForums.com

Is six sigma another fad in maintenance or is there something different about six sigma?

I have done a small amount of research and not been trained ... To me, it seems to be very strict about evidence and using data.

Problem is, in maintenance we don’t have much data and what we have is not reliable usually, and at the end of the day, we do not want to collect data. We need to solve problems without much data so the six sigma rules about evidence and data seem to suggest six sigma is not the right tool for reliability professionals unless they are involved in expensive reliability growth programs (where
experiments are set up) or companies with fleets of equipment operating in the same way.

I am interested in this topic because at the moment I am skeptical as to whether 6 Sigma has anything to add to RCM or the common RCFA methods.

Regards
Steve

Performance-based services for industrial markets

by Magnus Pousette, Vice President, ABB Reliability Services North America

The changing face of plant management relationships

Global process industries, as well as discrete manufacturers, face a number of challenges. All are under pressure to improve productivity and reduce costs. At the same time, all need to meet strict industry standards for the environment, health and safety in addition to maintaining a skilled work force. A way in which companies can achieve these goals is to concentrate on the core of their business, while partners assume responsibility for non-core areas.

Focusing on the core business

The belief that an industrial or product-based company’s strategic advantage derives from its core competencies – its high value-added internal activities – is widely accepted in strategy formulation.

12 Steps to Inventory Recovery

An iPresentation Tutorial by Andy Gager, Life Cycle Engineering

The original 12-Step Program was developed in the 1930’s and incorporated by Alcoholics Anonymous to help people deal with their “powerlessness” to stop drinking. Since then the 12-Step Model has been adopted by many other groups dealing with an array of issues that all have one thing in common: a desire to stop. What about bloated inventories? What about warehouses overstocked with inactive and unusable parts? What about investment that is literally “going through the roof?” These are all indications of poor inventory management, yet there are still some people out there who, despite these symptoms, continue to cram more and more material into every available nook and cranny. Even though they know it’s wrong, internal and external forces make them feel powerless to do anything about it. What can be done for Materials Managers with a desire to stop this dangerous behavior? View this 9 minute iPresentation Tutorial to learn the 12 Steps to Inventory Recovery

Managing the Complete Motor System

by Howard W. Penrose, PhD, CMRP

Modern management practices often do not take into account the importance of motor systems maintenance and management requirements. Through efforts in cost control, many industrial and commercial firms reduce maintenance staffs, take least cost approaches to corrective actions and sacrifice preventive maintenance programs. The result has been increased energy costs and downtime resulting from equipment not operating to full potential and failing unexpectedly. The problem results in $100’s of billions of dollars in additional energy consumption and lost revenue. Unfortunately, in many cases, the connection between the cause and effect is not made. More…

Gain Knowledge at IMC-2007 Dec 4-7, 2007 Daytona Beach Florida

Note: Due to the Thanksgiving holiday this special newsletter replaces the weekly Reliabilityweb.com and Maintenance-Tips email. We will resume a normal schedule next week.

Dear Maintenance & Reliability Professional,

We all want to make maintenance improvements but do you know what that means? Most of us use “best efforts” to make our companies better but as quality and reliability Guru W. Edward Deming states “best efforts without knowledge is just best efforts”.

By what method do you plan to make those improvements?

Participate in the International Maintenance Conference and you will gain knowledge about methods you can put to immediate use. You will discover new strategies, new theories, new techniques and new technologies to realize the potential of your workforce and your physical assets.

Bring your Spouse

No one ever disappointed a spouse by bringing her/him to Florida in December. For a small additional fee you can purchase a Spouse meal pass for all meal and networking functions. The conference hotel is located right on Daytona Beach with all the attractions you would expect to provide additional off site activities.

The International Maintenance Conference has it perks!

People come to the International Maintenance Conference to gain knowledge – but they also come to have some fun – and we are pleased to provide it.

All attendees are invited to join us for the IMC-2007 Beach Party with Karaoke, Casino night, with plenty of food, drinks, prizes and most importantly an opportunity to meet other people who do the same jobs that you do in a fun, friendly environment.

In addition, there is a drawing for $500 worth of gift cards for each Expo break and grand prize drawing for an Alienware Laptop computer at the conference wrap up session. The odds that you will be a winner beat any lottery we know of!

I look forward to meeting you in Daytona Beach.

Best regards,
Terrence O’Hanlon, CMRP
Publisher, Reliabilityweb.com

PS: A Treat for all IMC-2007 Attendees
STS-122 Space Shuttle Launch at IMC-2007

If weather, reliability and luck permit – we will be treated to a launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis on Thursday December 6 just after the afternoon keynote. IMC-2007 participants can simply step out onto the beach and look southward approximately 25 miles to see the “once in a lifetime” site of a Space Shuttle launch in person. STS-122 will deliver the Columbus European Laboratory Module and will be the twenty-fourth mission to the International Space Station.
