Lubricators/Oilers disappearing?
At one of our problems solving sessions at LubricationWorld I was amazed to find out how many companies are eliminating the position of Lubricator/Oiler.
Some used a RCM type of analysis to eliminate many of the tasks, others outsourced this job to the primary lubrication supplier and others simply cut the job and lumped responsibility onto other maintenance people or operators.
What is happening at your company and how did you deal with the changes?

The Weakest Link
by Bill Brinkley AP / IA / ASQ
Manager of Reliability and Development
USAirways Express
What is the weakest, most unreliable, least dependable part of any system or process?
If you said the human that is operating it or maintaining it, you would be correct. Human Factors is a buzz word in industry these days, but it has been around in the airline world for a long while now. We have special classes on Human Factors – how to recognize them, and how to defend against them. It is something that we take quite seriously, and perhaps you should also.
There are twelve recognized human factors. The “Dirty Dozen” as they are commonly called. They are:...

PdM-2007 and LubricationWorld Delivers
The 3rd Annual Predictive Maintenance Technology Conference collocated with LubricationWorld-2007 was a great success with over 700 maintenance and reliability professionals participating.
Held in Las Vegas, this unique learning event focused on:
1) The Technologies used for machinery condition monitoring
2) Lubrication strategies for reliability, cleanliness and contamination control
3) Managing effective predictive maintenance and lubrication programs
“The amount of maintenance managers and reliability engineers participating increased dramatically this year” stated Terrence O’Hanlon, event organizer “and we take increased management interest as a sign of the resurgence of Predictive Maintenance and effective Lubrication program management. The legacy vibration instrument companies and PdM service providers have fallen off the map and innovative players like Commtest, Ludeca, SPM, Maintenance Technology Systems, Timken, Chevron, IVC and Allied Reliability are picking up the ball and running with it as major deals were signed at PdM-2007.”
This event also featured all of the major motor test instrument manufacturers, all the major Ultrasound companies, all but one of major Infrared suppliers, all major industrial oil analysis laboratories, all major condition monitoring sensor vendors, several PdM Software suppliers, several lubrication support companies and a few consultants who can help companies put it all together.
Our congratulations go out to the Uptime Magazine PdM Program of the Year Award winners (watch for more details in the October Uptime) and our thanks goes out to all those who shared their knowledge and experience to assist others in moving forward on their own journeys toward reliability.
PdM-2008 and LubricationWorld-2008 will be held September 15-17 at the Qwest Center in Omaha Nebraska.
