Definition of Machine Function
President, SUCCESS by DESIGN
The function of a system or component is defined as what the system is intended to perform. Often we become confused and think that the function is what the system is capable of performing. This is not true. If you have a pump that can provide 100 gpm at 200 ft of head and the system only requires 50 gpm at 100 ft of head, what is the intended function of the equipment? The good news is that there is space between capability and necessity. Therefore, critical machines should be maintained to PRESERVE FUNCTION.
In effect, most systems are designed to cover many different functions but the operation may only require a portion of those capabilities. If the maintenance program is designed to preserve functions that are not used as part of the needs of the company, then the effort is wasted. An effective program will focus on preserving those functions at the level necessary to perform to expectations.
