In the Reliability and Maintenance Industry, there is a rule that is often broken: Tools such as RCM, CBM, Lean Maintenance, TPM, etc. are designed to help the business understand the budget requirements of optimal R&M.  They are not designed to make R&M fit a specific budget.  This error has led to the collapse and disaster of many maintenance program attempts.

OK, so I spoke too soon.

A combination of reliability, customer service and a little attention to detail can go a long way.  In the past, I have written editorials related to my experiences with air travel and outsourcing.  This week I was handed several more stories by an airline and a company that I outsourced website development to.

Over the past months, we have wandered through a variety of editorials on reliability and maintenance throughout a variety of industries.  In this newsletter, however, we are going to bring our focus back to electric motor systems in a basic discussion on figuring out where and how to start your program.  Why?  The main reason is that the question started as an occasional whisper and has now grown to a massive crescendo of voices asking that same question: “How do I kick start my motors program (can also be ‘maintenance’ program)?” Usually followed by: “How do I convince management?” Then: “How do I sustain it?”
