ScottishPower Selects Blue Dot’s mNOW! Mobile Framework

One of the largest utilities in the United Kingdom will leverage mNOW! as enterprise-wide mobile infrastructure platform to mobilize all lines of business

Glasgow, Scotland - ScottishPower, the UK’s leading supplier of energy products to more than 5.1 million domestic and business customers, have selected Blue Dot’s mNOW! Mobile Framework as their enterprise wide mobile infrastructure platform.  mNOW! will initially target the extension of ScottishPower’s existing inspection based asset management system, with full integration to GIS spatial data for field users.

ScottishPower has procured a mNOW! Mobile Framework Enterprise License, creating a foundation for many different and unique mobile applications to be deployed across unlimited mobile user groups.  The framework provides ScottishPower with the internal flexibility to build, modify, and grow additional mobile applications, while incorporating a consistent look and feel to all ScottishPower mobile user groups.  One of the largest target areas of return on investment for ScottishPower includes the mobile extension of work and asset management systems.  In this area, ScottishPower will leverage mNOW! to automate inspections, field based work orders, labor entry, field quotations, and many related business processes.  The system will combine the use of tablet computers and PDAs, with integration to ESRI spatial data through mNOW!’s Mobile API.  Synchronization will include traditional batch and dial-up, plus deployment of GPRS and 802.11 based communications.

Blue Dot was selected as the mobile vendor of choice after an intensive evaluation process by Scottish Power.  Prior to full project award, ScottishPower and Blue Dot collaborated on a 30-day Proof of Concept to reduce risk, ensure project success, and gain overall business acceptance.  The Proof of Concept not only proved to be a significant success, but delivered reusable software for the phase 1 implementation.  The POC included integration with spatial mapping, and delivered functionality for both tablet and PDA platforms.

With recent advancements in mobile device capabilities combined with high bandwidth wireless network availability in the UK, ScottishPower has recognized the strategic importance to implement a mobile infrastructure to manage their company wide mobile strategy.  With the flexible integration capabilities of the framework, ScottishPower plans to leverage mNOW! to extend multiple backend applications within the enterprise.  Additionally, the Application Design Tool and Connection Management modules deliver advanced technologies to enable ScottishPower to successfully deploy, manage, and support the configured solutions. Significant financial and non-financial benefits will be gained through the initial rollout, and the enterprise wide mobility strategy will play a major role to realizing overall productivity gains for years to come.

The ScottishPower mobility project follows the successful implementation of a similar project with UK-based Scottish Water.  Blue Dot will establish a UK operation to capitalize on the success of two major enterprise-wide mobility projects.  Blue Dot’s mNOW! Partner Program will be the foundation for the UK-based business model that will closely replicate the one established in North America.  Blue Dot’s mNOW! Partner Program provides all key business partners (consulting, integration and ISV software partners) and direct customers with an intuitive and enabling mobility framework.  For more details on Blue Dot’s mNOW!
