March 27, 2008   Develop, Implement and Measure

Raising an Asset Performance Management Program by John Mitchell, Meridium

Having worked in the industry for more decades than anyone would want to admit, it is now amusing to observe first-hand a fast-moving, high-technology company that has an abundance of younger people just entering their parenting years. For an individual like me who has been through “the program” with both children and grandchildren, the enthusiasm and innocence I see in these new parents is often quite humorous.

Drawing a parallel between developmental milestones and reliability improvements, one engineer integrated his child’s sonogram into a presentation – but totally neglected the crucial KPIs: sleeping through the night and potty training!

Parenting is clearly a top down activity – left to themselves the little darlings would eat sugary cereal, watch too much TV, leave their junk around, go to bed late, and never, ever help with the routine chores. Standards of behavior and household chores must be established by an authority – mom and dad!

An asset performance management (APM) program shares many of the same characteristics with parenting. More…

March 27, 2008   Return On Asset Reliability Workshop Knoxville

Plant Engineering and Maintenance Show
May 6-8
Knoxville Marriott

Workshop 1
Return On Asset Reliability (ROAR™)

Return On Asset Reliability is a non-traditional approach to financial metrics and how they can be used to justify reliability improvement initiatives. Most companies have institutionalized their inefficiencies. Which is a nice way of saying, they have little clue about how much hidden capacity their existing operations have. And instead of identifying and eliminating the sources of these inefficiencies, they find it easier to ask for capital monies to expand their current operations. ROAR provides a way to quickly and easily understand the costs associated with these decisions.

In this one day workshop, you will step through building a plant level ROAR and learn what data you will need to collect to build a model for your plant. You will calculate the cost savings associated with achieving Best Practice in Maintenance and be introduced to how to utilize Reliability Process Plots to quantify the true Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) improvement opportunity for your facility.

March 27, 2008   Managing Calibrations in SAP

by Craig Read, Divisional Engineer: MGO2 and SAP Planning, AMIMechE, Sappi Saiccor (Pty) Ltd

A brief overview of the development and management of instrumentation calibrations in SAP.

Introduction

A major SAP upgrade from SAP3.1 to SAP4.6 was implemented at Sappi South Africa between 2003 until 2004. Many of the Sappi business process were reviewed during this project and particularly in the plant maintenance area of the business.

SAP PM has been well entrenched in the business since the first implementation of SAP in 1998 and is used to schedule all maintenance work. One area in which work scheduling using SAP PM had proved challenging and where we’ve had limited buy-in was in the area of instrument calibrations. More…
